Australian Financial Review: KFK in Melbourne

It’s a cold Friday night in Shanghai’s former French concession and the Kung Fu Komedy Club is filling up with a fashionable crowd of young professionals. Rather than milling round the bar, most are in their seats early to hear the night’s first performance: a Chinese-language show hosted by local comedian Storm Xu.

As the doors close, the room is full and a few latecomers are even turned away for lack of tickets.

Xu and the five comedians who follow him joke about gay sex, cultural differences, territorial disputes and the general lack of privacy in China where questions about salary and your rent can be asked soon after meeting someone.
